3D Printed Battery Adapter for Camera-Mount LED Panel
We do understand the role of LED panels and their multiple uses due to availability of high Color Rendering Index. They can be used for photography, video and documenting your next big DIY project as they can reproduce color perfectly. In this project of Adafruit, they have created a panel, which features a Sony battery mount. The exciting feature is that they have made this adaptable to work with any of the camcorder battery holders with the help of 3D printing.
You will need a Camcorder Battery Holder, Camera-Mount LED Panel, Swivel-Head Pan Tilt (PTZ) Shoe Mount Adapter and some basic tools & supplies like 3D Printer, Filament (ABS, PLA, etc.), Screwdriver and Soldering Iron. The circuit diagram for this project uses Sony and Canon batteries, whose positive and negative connections respectively are swapped. For 3D Printing settings, you can download the profile from here.
Further the original design is customized and is also available for download in different formats from here. For custom support, Simplify 3D is used under the two corners were the wires exit the adapter with 4mm pillar to each side. PLA material is recommended to use in order to reduce warping while printing or print the parts in different types of filament, such as ABS, PET and Nylon.
After the parts were verified with common printing settings and areas where tolerances really matters are the side groove cutouts and the screw holes. You can test the part fit by inserting it inside the battery slot. If the groove cutout is taut, use Simplify 3Ds horizontal size compensation to alter the size of the groove.
Make sure that six phillips screws of the camcorder battery holder must fit inside the mounting holes. Parts with big surface demands a well leveled build plate, which can be achieved using blue tapers tape and sticky adhesives. Assemble them and remove the heat shrink by letting wires pass through the adapter part.
Next the metal ring contacts are unsoldered and wire holes are cleaned up. After the loosening the mounting holes for screwing, the metal ring are twisted. Wires run through pin cutouts and ring to wires are again soldered. Connections are recessed and the two connections rings are pushed inside the part until the metal is held against wall. The screws are inserted into the adaptor and then the screw flush is mounted to the adaptor button. Voila and you are done !
