Advanced DC Motor Drivers for Functionally Safe Vehicle Electrification

By Manasa April 7, 2016

NXP semiconductors has introduced the HB2000 and HB2001 advanced brushed DC motor drivers. These motor drivers are useful for the automotive applications which requires functionally safe vehicle electrification such as cruise control, turbo flaps, fuel flaps and throttle control.

The HB2000 and HB2001 are the first motor drivers designed using ISO26262 processes in support of ASIL level C and D system qualification. These DC motor drivers have an SPI interface to control the versatility, enhanced thermal features for reliable continuous operation and it also has Processor Expert analog software driver for streamlined embedded system design. The NXP’s 45V smart MOS process is used in this fully integrated driver because it helps to reduce the board space by combining digital control, precision analog circuitry and power MOSFETs in a small, thermally efficient, 8 x 8mm PQFN package.

The new motor drivers appear as any other integrated peripheral within the MCU software development tools, this feature enables the MCU-savvy embedded system designers to quickly implement them in their software projects. The Analog software drivers which are used in HB2000 and HB2001 are compatible with legacy processor expert tools and new Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Kinetis Microcontrollers.

Some of the Key Features and Advantages of the HB2000 and HB2001

  • Smaller Package for Better Vehicle Electrification Design

The HB2000 and HB2001 delivers 5A RMS, >10 A peak output current capability in a package. It also provides 50 percent lower package thermal resistance and 50% lower RDS(ON)  at <65 mΏ, patented thermal protected current limiting and high-side current recirculation, to maintain cool operation.

  • Functional Safety

The HB2000 and HB2001motor drivers are designed using ISO26262 certified methodologies and include advanced diagnostic reporting and safety features.

  • Accuracy, Flexibility and Configurability

It provides design flexibility with a choice of PQFN or SOIC-EP package and two RDS(ON) options. Design Configurability is achieved through SPI control for different loads and EMI conditions, with 4 current limits and 8 slew rate settings. Several different applications can be addressed with a single software platform which saves the development time and investment.

  • Robust and Reliable Analog Performance

These products are designed and manufactured with diligent process controls, and qualified using industry standard methodologies. It is designed to yield defect rates in line with the demanding requirements of the automotive and industrial markets.

Availability

The HB2000 and HB2001 advanced brushed DC motor drivers will be available for purchase via direct sales in Q2, 2016. Samples in the 10 x 11 mm SOIC-EP package are available now.
