Renesas Electronics Corporation and Dibotics recently announced their collaboration for presenting an automotive-grade embedded solution for LiDAR processing. LiDAR processing is a special mechanism used in automated driving applications and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The solution developed under guidance of both these firms will allow system makers to come up with a real-time 3D mapping system that will have high level functional safety and very low power consumption.
Under present scenario, LiDAR processing demands an upgraded embedded software and a highly efficient processing platform. Renesas is a firm known for delivering industry leading semiconductor solutions while Dibotics is a pioneer in real-time 3D LiDAR processing, both are going to bring-in their fortes together to give a worthy solution for this problem. They mainly intend to combine the high performance image processing and low power automotive R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) from Renesas with 3D simultaneous localization and mapping technology (SLAM) from Diobotics. The SLAM on Chip usually implements 3D SLAM SLAM processing over a SoC for high-performance pCs. It is capable of realizing 3D mapping only with LiDAR data which obliviates the requirement of using inertial measurement units and GPS data. This collaboration would allow a real-time 3D mapping system with lower power consumption and some higher level functional safety inside an automotive system.
The automotive market is gearing up for a new era of autonomous driving there are a number of challenges that still need to be resolved. This new system being developed by these two firms will definitely solve one problem but other issues like high-definition perception of surroundings, real-time perception of environment, sensor fusion, precise localization of vehicle, and optimization of sensor technology still remain a big challenge. LiDAR has turned into a key that offers higher -precision obstacle sensing in vehicle’s surroundings and real-time management of Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for automotive.
