As per the recent market reports, at least 7 km of roads in the central business district area of Bengaluru is going to be equipped with IoT-enabled solutions. Dubbed as ‘Smart SURE’ by the civic corporation, these kinds of roads will contribute towards the establishment of a smart city, backed by hi-tech amenities.
The roads in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha including MG Road, Brigade Road, and Commercial Street will be covered under this plan. The facilities include 50 smart card-enabled public cycle sharing points, 30 e-rickshaw stands, 35 e-toilets, water ATMs, 420 sensor-based dustbins and 50 designated vending kiosks.
All of these kiosks (mentioned above) will be connected to 1,250 smart telecom towers that also act as street light poles. Besides, all the roads covered under the plan will have wi-fi connectivity.

This futuristic venture is a part of INR 2090 Crore plan that aims to make Bengaluru a smart city. Last month, the city was shortlisted under the Smart Mission. It was the BBMP’s third attempt to get India’s IT Capital included in Prime Minister Modi’s pet project.
21.8 square km of Bengaluru’s core area has been chosen by the authorities under the Area-Based Development (ABD) which will receive a lion share amounting to INR 1,166 Crores in the Smart City Project. The areas comprise the historic Pete and Cantonment with old markets and commercial hubs of MG Road, Chickpet, Avenue road, and Commercial Street.
Other areas to be included under the smart city ABD include Shivajinagar and Majestic bus depots, Russell Market, KR Market and Malleswaram market, Ulsoor and Sankey lakes, Cubbon Park, Swathanthra Palya slum and KC General Hospital.
The capital expenditure is likely to be contributed by the State and Central governments for up to INR 500 Crore each while the remaining can be expected from public-private partnership, BMRCL, and BMTC, etc.
