Svenn-Tore Larsen got so much dependent on Bluetooth that he is trying built his whole business around this technology. However, his company, Nordic Semiconductor, doesn’t agrees with his idea and refrains from increasing their indulgence in this technique. The company is instead putting all its resources on a new technology called Bluetooth Smart. This new iteration is known for consuming lesser power from batteries and works more efficiently than its previous versions. Last year, around 57 percent of total revenue earned by this company came from Bluetooth Smart chips sales giving an overall growth of 37 percent to the company.
As Larsen likes to add, “We are positioned for a great market opportunity,” He further explained the growing demand for this technology in wearables and devices. He also informed the investors in a conference held in April 2016 that the new version Bluetooth Smart will account for bringing up a part of this business in coming years. Nordic’s efforts in this direction are really very special. The company is part of the huge chip manufacturing industry that is forever busy in fusing processors with low-power wireless components within integrated systems or System-on-Chips (SoCs).The industry experts assume that building and factory devices will have to work in a way that least battery power is abstracted from their surroundings. This is only possible in presence of extremely-low level power networks.
By year 2021, Bluetooth Smart will become part of approx. 27 percent of all Bluetooth carrying products, as per ABI Research. As per some previous stats released by same firm, around 20 billion Bluetooth chips are expected to be sold during the period of 2014-2019. As per Andrew Zignani, the industry analyst from ABI Research, “While there remain significant opportunities for Bluetooth smartphone accessories and connected home devices, there will be increasing traction toward connecting to everyday household objects. Improvements in energy efficiency and range, and reductions in size, will be contributing factors accelerating shipment growth.”
As per the Bluetooth Special Interests Group, more than ninety percent of smartphones bearing Bluetooth are expected to support the latest version of this technology by year 2018. A decade ago, Bluetooth Smart was termed as Wibree. The latest version of this gadget will be capable enough of meshing networks, permitting Bluetooth equipment across the buildings to get connected with each other. In the beginning of current year, Bluetooth SIG presented a new framework that can support developers in building gateways for relaying data to the cloud and bringing it back. Arduino too joined the league recently by making Smart into its advanced Primo development board, so that it would be able to interact with few other internet connected nodes without depending upon the resources required for making expensive and complicated gateway like smartphone or Wi-Fi routers.
Almost all top level chip makers are in a race to inculcate Bluetooth Smart in their devices. A few high level firms like Medaitek and Marvell and Texas Instruments are dedicating their internal resources for development of low-power chips. Other are moving towards mergers and acquisitions in order to stay in pace with other makers.
