ZigBee is a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols which can be used to create personal area networks. To connect more than one devices you will need XBee card for each device. You can also connect the devices in a mesh network. Even if a node is not connected to the central node, you can pass the message to another node, and the message keeps getting sent, till it reaches the central node. The only issue being, XBee card comes at a high cost, approximately priced at INR 1000.
So in this project, we are connecting an Arduino Uno, an XBee Shield with the central node, Raspberry Pi to the XBee explorer node. Along with these, we need 2 modules XBee. You can check out the link for the steps and the code needed to connect these components.
It’s pretty cool, if you think of it. You can use it as a sensor to inform you, in case there’s a fire, or it’s raining or absolutely anything. You could program it to send you a mail, a tweet or a Whatsapp message. Let us know how you decide to use this XBee.
