Digi International has introduced a new LTE Cat 4 cellular modem designed to expand connectivity options for industrial and commercial Internet of Things (IoT) systems. The module supports higher bandwidth applications such as digital signage, energy and utility monitoring, fleet systems, industrial equipment, and agricultural networks.
The modem integrates with the established XBee form factor, allowing designers to adapt existing hardware across multiple cellular technologies, including LTE Cat 4 and low-power LTE-M/NB-IoT, without redesigning their devices. Global carrier and regulatory certifications simplify the integration process, reducing the time and effort required to bring products to market.
Engineered for consistent performance in varied environments, the module includes LTE Cat 4 connectivity with automatic 2G and 3G fallback to maintain network availability. It incorporates a GNSS receiver for geolocation and asset tracking, Bluetooth Low Energy for local sensor connections and configuration, and supports SPI, UART, and USB interfaces for flexible integration into host systems.
An onboard MicroPython environment allows developers to embed custom logic directly on the module, enabling localized data processing and decision-making. This reduces the need for external controllers while supporting cloud integration with platforms such as AWS IoT and Microsoft Azure IoT. Access to local I/O and Bluetooth communication enables responsive, edge-level operations that can streamline system design and reduce hardware complexity.
Remote device management is supported through Digi Remote Manager, a platform that provides centralized monitoring, diagnostics, and over-the-air updates for large deployments. The accompanying Digi XBee Studio software offers configuration and control tools for both local and remote modules, helping engineers manage connected devices more efficiently.
Security features are built into the design to protect against unauthorized access and maintain data integrity. Together, these capabilities offer a foundation for developing connected systems that can operate reliably and be managed at scale.
The LTE Cat 4 modules are available through authorized distributors and include an activated SIM option. Users can also access a trial of Digi Remote Manager for evaluation and deployment planning.
