Have you ever shared or downloaded a file from the popular file sharing networks on the internet? If you have worked with Raspberry Pi, then you must have downloaded its entire OS through peer to peer sharing software called Torrent. An exclusive feature that gets the Torrent quite popular is the anonymous file sharing process. You don’t get to know who is sharing the file and if properly taken care, even the downloader can go anonymous. A boon to get free stuff on the internet, peer to peer file sharing has created a lot of nuisance between regulators and internet preservers. While sharing paid and royalty oriented software might trigger the same nuisance, free open source software (FOSS) get communicated all over the world. However, there are certain hardware and community hindrances which keep one away from the good habit of sharing. When you want to share open source, why not use an open source to make an open source? Don’t get confused, what we mean by the last line is lets DIY an open source gadget using open source hardware to share some open source software.
A team of geniuses led by David Darts and Matthias Strubel has used Raspberry Pi to create an anonymous file sharing machine, known as the Pirate Box. The name is a spin-off of a popular torrent providing website “Pirate Bay” and quite suits the gadget considering its basic function. Extracting more out of the Pi, this gadget can also be used to stream media, chat and message boarding. All you have to do is DIY the gadget and connect to the Pirate Box network.
We have seen a lot of Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns where these open source gadgets turn up for crowd funding, but this is not one of those types. The innovators have specified that Pirate Box is and would always be unique in terms of hands that craft it. They have, however, given a fully detailed FAQ page and all resources so that no one has hard time in spreading his ideas. If you own a Raspberry Pi, this looks quite justified and also as one of the most important and long applications.
