With the help of 3D Printing, Adafruit has converted a pair of ‘private display glasses’ into a “google glass”. It has the ability to fit into any prescription glasses, and display device with Composite Video like a Raspberry Pi. The device is affordable, where the 3d printed parts can be downloaded for free on Thingiverse.
In order to connect to the raspberry pi, the display of glasses uses composite video. Some of its parts are NTSC/PAL Video Glasses, Raspberry Pi and Miniature Wireless USB Keyboard with Touchpad. The Tools & Supplies used for this project includes 3D Printer, Flat Pliers, 30AWG Wire Wrap, Heat Shrink Pack, Screwdriver Set, Composite Video Cable and 3D Printing.
The project starts with disassembling the nose guard piece from the Video Glasses with a screwdriver. The shaded lenses are to be carefully removed from the Glasses. Once the screw is removed, pry open the enclosure gently and the two halves are separated using a flat-head screwdriver.
Next, the PCB from the enclosure is removed using a pair of flat pliers. As soon as the two video display screens are removed from the enclosure, the two eyepieces are unscrewed with the eye covers which are held to the magnify lenses. The second display from the PCB is carefully detached and it is stored away as a backup.
A video display, the kopin video processing circuit and the power circuit is required with the USB port and two audio input jacks. Now to assemble the parts, the four connections are unsoldered from the power circuit for increasing the length of the wires. The plastic eyepiece is placed with the magnifying lens on top of the hud-eye.stl part.
The same screws are reused to secure the eyepiece into the hud-eye.stl part with the help of a screwdriver. After the eyepiece is positioned into the hud-cap.stl part with the ridden and cable connections, the hud-elbow.stl part is carefully threaded around the wire connections of the video eye display through the cavity.
The hud-kopincap.stl part is inserted to the hud-elbow.stl as shown in the figure.
