Fujitsu Limited recently started shipping its supercomputer ‘Fugaku’. The new product has been developed in association with RIKEN. It is currently being promoted under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. The machine is expected to get functional between 2021-2022.
Why so long? Because this supercomputer is a combination of 150, 000 CPUs joined together to form a single operational unit. All these CPUs are high-performance units specifically meant for high-level tasks. Fujitsu has delivered just the first unit, rest of the units are to be delivered in coming months.
Development of Fugaku allowed Fujitsu to assemble myriad of technologies including the most cutting edge developments, simulation, AI, and system integration techniques. With the help of its supercomputing technologies, the tech giant plans to address several important matters like prominent social issues, facilitation of innovative research, earning a solid edge over its competitors, and apply some competent technologies in Digital Transformation (DX), drug development, disaster management and prevention, etc.
Features
Fugaku features more than 150, 000 high-performance CPUs A64FX. All these CPUs were developed by the firm itself using the Arm instruction set architecture. To join all units with each other they used a high-speed network called Tofu Interconnect.
Fujitsu equipped this computer with the latest cutting edge technologies to ensure high reliability and superb performance. It is the same reason why it teamed with RIKEN.
Why was it needed?
Fugaku was developed with the sole intent of achieving a hundred times better application performance of K computer. Apart from being a technologically superior machine, it also features the highest energy efficiency in the world.
