Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Taiwan Limited have announced their plan to build a new supercomputer system for Taiwan’s National Center for High-Performance Computing, National Applied Research Laboratories (NCHC). It will have the highest performance in Taiwan when the operations commence from May 2018. The new system will serve as the core platform for research and development in Taiwan so as to foster the development and growth of the country’s overall industries and economy.
Interestingly, NCHC is Taiwan’s only national-level supercomputer center which is used by more than 1,000 users including research institutions, private companies, and foreign researchers. It promotes international joint researches and contributes to innovation along with the advancement of Taiwan’s scientific, technological capabilities, as well as, economy.
As a result, the new system will give the center a research platform so as to accommodate new research fields like AI and big data and accelerate the pace of further research.
Talking further about the new system, it comprises 715 servers, including a next generation model of Fujitsu’s Server PRIMERGY. It brings together the most advanced computing technologies in the form of the latest server CPU from Intel and the fastest current GPU from NVIDIA.
In detail, 631 computation nodes use the Intel Xeon processor Scalable family while 64 accelerator nodes use the NVIDIA Tesla P100. Moving on to the efficiency, these CPUs have a theoretical peak performance of over 2.13 petaflops and the GPUs have more than 1.35 petaflops, thereby making the overall total over 3.48 petaflops.
Each computation node is connected by Fujitsu’s latest high-speed interconnect, Intel Omni-Path Architecture, and with the acceleration technology held by Fujitsu delivers highly parallel processing performance. In addition, the system also uses company’s cutting-edge cooling technology, allowing effective energy conservation.
