The researcher team from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology discovered that graphene might be the most useful product with respect to plasmonic devices manufacturing. These devices are known for their ability to detect single molecules of toxic chemicals explosive stuff and several other organic compounds. Plasmon can be understood as a quantum of plasma oscillations or quasiparticles. As per the research team surface level reactions of the electromagnetic waves with other plasmons can bring groundbreaking improvements in optics and electronics.

A prime possibility of such improvements opens up with the plasmonic effects. One of the counted effects is on subwavelength light focusing. This will enhance the responsiveness of plasmonic devices up to the point where these can be distinguished from an alone molecule. The discovery has led to creation of a new model that is capable of predicting plasmonic interaction capability in graphene. The team working on it has thus defined a spaser that needs graphene layer in its completion.
Spacer can be better described as a gadget which resembles to laser and functions on the same primary principle. But to give radiation as output, the spacer depends on optical transitions inside the gain medium, the particles that are generated from this process are known as surface plasmons that is completely against the photons generated by the laser. Alexander Dorofeenko the lead researcher says, “The graphene spaser could be used to design compact spectral measurement devices capable of detecting even a single molecule of a substance, which is essential for many potential applications. Such sensors could detect organic molecules based on their characteristic vibrational transitions as the light emitted/absorbed falls into the medium infrared region, which is exactly where the graphene-based spaser operates.“
