Evandromiami recently exploited a well-known fact about romaine lettuce and developed a deep water culture hydroponic system for optimizing the lettuce growth process. It is a known to all that if you eat the head of lettuce except for the bottom part and place it in water it will grow again. The system developed by Evandromiami just optimizes the process and helps in rapid and healthy growth of these shoots.
Under this system, lettuce growth takes place in a five-gallon plastic bucket that is filled with water up to the rim. This bucket is then kept under full spectrum lights and the Arduino 101 is used for keeping a check on humidity levels, temperature changes, light control, pH levels, water level, and other such factors with the help of a specific set of sensors. The complete system is administered through Bluetooth and the owner gets notifications over an LCD screen. The system also allows the user to make required adjustments and keep things under control. All electronic devices along with the Curie-based board are kept safe under a power strip and the farm stays inside an air conditioned closet.
This Arduino 101-project is not yet complete. However, Evandromiami has been expanding the application to other vegetables like tomatoes. The world of hydroponics is really an interesting one, you can get all details about this project here
