The gem of the motorized infantry, tanks are one of those few armed vehicles that could never be replaced, but have always evolved. Having invention and ideas having traced to thousands of years back, these metal and alloy powerhouses are enough powered to take down any sort of opposition on land as well as air. An all-terrain vehicle with the capacity to take on anything, can you imagine the scenarios where it can be used if you can DIY it? Well, not the usual monster version, but a smaller, handy robot one? It won’t need someone to sit inside and control it, but then can be made smarter and pretty much working on the auto-pilot as its default mode.
In this blog, we witness an interesting DIY based tank designing where, George Frick, its inventor makes an autonomous wandering tank. Having an Arduino as its essence, this tank bot is a hard work demanding assemblage of DC motors, DC motor shield, battery, soldering and of course, smart coding. Mr. Frick does this project in a couple of stages. In the first stage, he makes a basic tank robot that can carry out simple movement functions. In the second stage, he adds the smartness to it, where it can quick look at the nearby areas and avoid any obstacles that come in its way. As any tech enthusiast can tell, the tank became less with these features when the hardware got a digital distance sensor upgrade.
It is for sure that this DIY, even though teaches us to make a tank, doesn’t even remotely mention of weapons. Being an Arduino derivative, you can add a lot of other smarter things such as a camera/recorder shield, portable charging unit or simply, a couple of LEDs. This machine can serve as a utility as well as an entertainment option. What applications are you going to use it for? Make one and find out!!
