Valentin Hobel recently explained an innovative way to turn Raspberry Pi in a Tor proxy which can route every single internet connection from your personal network to any unknown Tor network. Almost two decades ago, the face of communication was modified forever in West part of the globe as Internet and mobile telephones entered the world. The Through this innovation, Hobel aims to give people a strong weapon to protect themselves against eavesdropping of government agencies on personal communication. The Tor network empowers the users to camouflage their IP address which is one of the most significant feature while you work on internet and helps in keeping your personal things personal. As per him the most decent way to utilizing Tor is to transform the basic Raspberry Pi into Wi-Fi network access point that can route every single connection over Tor network.
One of the small issues that he faced in this respect is that Tor needs to be installed on every single device in home. However, logic says that it is more rational to centralize at one single access point. The best solution he found to this problem is by turning the central point into Wi-Fi access point. It reduced all hassle and made possible to use Tor in the most problem free manner on all electronic equipment right from smart TVs to PCs and smartphone. The higher energy efficiency and small dimensions of Raspberry Pi offer a perfect basis for personal Tor routers.
Adafruit is currently offering Tor and Rasp Pi combination for a price of US$90 and the product is named as “Onion Pi”. As per Valentin it will help people in saving money and will also take away your fear of dealing with Linux. The users can easily put together their own Onion Pi in one go. In order to prepare Onion Pi, the users will need a Wi-Fi adapter, Raspberry Pi Model B that is compatible with their PCs operating system, a LAN cable, and a SD card with 4GB memory, micro-USB connector, power supply and an output of minimum 700mAh. Once you have all these things in place with you, you would need to start the process, configure it, install Raspberry Pi, and activate IP forwarding.
Valentin further adds that by this procedure you will be able to conceal one’s IP address perfectly. However, you wouldn’t be anonymous surfer as other browser extensions like Flash and Java will circumvent this kind of anonymization. There are some flaws in this system, for e.g. Firefox’s Javascript engine is flawed that is used by Tor for delivering parts of browser bundles till end of 2013. If Tor ever visited a properly prepared web page, the script of that page can easily grab MAC address along with the hostname and will inform US intelligence agencies. Therefore, for better protection Volentin advises people to be attentive while dealing their personal data on Firefox in combination with other free of cost extensions. You can always add a no script extension.
