Intel recently announced its partnership with MediaTek for further support, certification, and development of 5G modem solutions for next-gen PC experiences. Under this partnership, Intel will define specifications for 5G solutions. MediaTek, on the other hand, will be developing and delivering a 5G modem.
To complete the game, Intel is to provide validation and optimizations across the platform. It will also lend system integration while co-engineering support to enable all its OEM partners.
When will it join markets?
The products produced under this partnership are expected in markets by the beginning of 2021. Top brands including HP and Dell will be delivering laptops equipped with MediaTek and Intel’s 5G solutions.
Why do you need to take note of this partnership?
It is a well-known fact that in upcoming years 5G will revolutionize networks across the world. It will stand as a unique convergence of communication and computing opening up new avenues for better PC experience and bringing the world closer than ever.
Intel is of the opinion that the best PCs in future will be capable of delivering experiences that assist users in doing much more than what they aim. 5G technology will be a robust building block in accomplishing this task.
Currently, Intel is leading the world on both cellular and wireless level PCs with its Wi-Fi 6 and LTE solutions. These solutions have been optimized according to both commercial and consumer segments. Teaming up of these two brands will further expand Intel’s profile of leadership connectivity products that will yield 5G on upcoming generations of highly developed laptops.
How does this partnership work?
It will begin with Intel defining 5G solutions specifications much focused on application of these solutions in most crucial laptop segments. MediaTek, on the other hand, will take responsibility for the manufacturing and development of the 5G modem. Intel will also be validating and developing platform-level software and hardware integration including host drives and OS.
The two brands also plan to bring-in Fibocom for development of M.2 modules that are optimized for integration with all Intel client platforms. Since Fibocom is the first module vendor for this solution, it will offer operator validation as well as regulatory support. The firm will also lead 5G M.2 module distribution, sales, and manufacturing.
