With a vision for a future where, high-performance single-cable docks, 4K video, and lifelike VR are commonly accessible, Intel has announced its plans to integrate Thunderbolt 3 into future Intel CPUs. It’s also going to release the Thunderbolt protocol specification to the industry in 2018.
With the integration of Thunderbolt 3, the computer makers will be able to build thinner and lighter systems carrying just Thunderbolt 3 ports. For the first time, all the ports on a computer are going to be the same. Any port can charge the system and connect to Thunderbolt devices, any display and even billions of USB devices.

Besides, the designs based on Intel’s integrated Thunderbolt 3 solution demand less board space. It also consumes less power by eliminating the need for discrete components for the existing systems. Next year, Intel is going to make the Thunderbolt protocol specification available to the industry under a royalty-free license. This will encourage third-party chip makers to build Thunderbolt-compatible chips.
Key Benefits:
• In a world where mobile platforms are getting thinner, lighter, and more powerful; Thunderbolt 3 enables mobility while ensuring that no compromises are made. The docks support multiple monitors as well as a single high-resolution monitor while transferring large files and charging the notebook at the same time.
• The amount of data created on a daily basis is growing huge. So, in order to speed up data transfer, storage makers are shifting from slower Serial ATA (SATA) drives to non-volatile memory SSDs. This provides higher speed and lower latency storage solutions. Those generating a large amount of data often need an external storage that is as fast as the internal SSD to expand capacity.
• As Thunderbolt connects NVMe SSDs to the PC, it fulfills such needs and helps in saving time for data transfers. It can transfer a full 4K movie in less than 30 seconds. Moreover, for virtual reality, multiple cables are required to transfer the experience from the PC to the headset in real time for 2K resolution but Thunderbolt 3 can deliver up to 4K resolution in virtual reality with a single cable.
About Intel
Intel Corporation is an American multinational corporation and technology company headquartered in Santa Clara, California that was founded by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce. It is the world’s largest and highest valued semiconductor chip makers based on revenue, and is the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors: the processors found in most personal computers (PCs). Intel also manufactures motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphics chips, embedded processors and other devices related to communications and computing.
