The British auto legend, Jaguar, recently unveiled its first Electric Vehicle (EV) concept car – the I-PACE. It is a SUV that sports electric motors in the front row along with rear axles that are capable of generating power worth 400PS against a peak torque of 700Nm. According to the vehicle line director, Ian Hoban, the I-PACE is capable enough to accelerate from 0-60 mph within four seconds. The battery of this car has been placed beneath the floor in-between the axels which brings down the vehicle’s center of gravity eventually reducing the yaw inertia. The permanent magnet electric motors for this vehicle were designed by Jaguar; these have an outer diameter of 234mm against length of 500mm.
Jaguar claims that I-PACE Concept’s range easily crosses 500kms with respect to the European NEDC combined cycle. Against the US EPA Cycle it goes above 220 miles without a hitch. It has also been reported that 80 percent charging of this vehicle takes place within 90 minutes while `100 percent charging takes 2-3 hours in total. It needs a 50kW DC charging for this purpose. The I-PACE stores energy in a liquid cooled 90 kWh lithium-ion battery that was again developed and designed in-house. The battery’s housing is formed by lightweight aluminum that makes an integral part of the I-PACE’s framework.
The battery in this vehicles employs pouch cells that are known for their better energy density, lower internal resistance, and superior thermal performance. This pack is liquid-cooled with the help of a dedicated 2-mode cooling circuit. Under very ambient and moderate climate the efficiency of this battery depends on radiator that easily gets rid of the heat that is produced during the process. When mercury rises over bearable limits, the chiller connected with main air conditioning unit of vehicle offers better cooling capacity. Ian Callum, the director of design for Jaguar says, “This isn’t just a concept. It is a preview of a five-seat production car that will be on the road in 2018. This will be Jaguar’s first-ever battery-powered electric vehicle and opens a new chapter in the history of our legendary brand.”
