Arrival of smart phones as an essentiality to our lives demanded them to be accessible even when we are not holding them. As a result, came hands free devices. Bluetooth headsets, wired headsets, phone docks and several other accessories cum gadgets came along to keep the phone connected with its user. However, when the phones got smarter, these accessories just couldn’t, a need for something better and more accessible was felt. A Bluetooth headset cannot show you time (as it’s worn over the ear) and a dock cannot be carried around. Then came up a solution to these handsfree gadgets, one, which could be tied right on your hand and wouldn’t have its distinct presence unlike the headsets. What we are talking about here is “smartwatch” which, whose presence has been made clear by many big names like Google, Apple, Sony etc. On analyzing a bit more, you will realize that smartwatch is a another type of wearable computer and when we have seen many types of wearable computers being DIY’ed, can’t we make one here too? Indeed, we can? What if we tell you one electronic enthusiast already has!
An Arduino lover, hailing from South Korea has made a USB chargeable smart watch which sports a tiny LCD screen and cases an Arduino Pro mini as its central processor. A complicated process at first sight, this project is though a time consuming one, is not a distant dream as its maker has given an exhaustive instruction list with images and all the resource links that he has used. The casing for the watch has also been made available in a 3D printable format for those who seek more presentable ways for this watch. Make it, customize it, use it, flaunt it!!
