Diagnostics with battery operated mobile devices gets way more easier with MAX86150 from Maxim Integrated Products Inc. The first-of-its-kind, it is an integrated biosensor module that will help designers take both ECG (Electrocardiogram) and PPG (Photoplethysmogram) measurements in a much simpler way.

It is an integrated biosensor that comes with photodetectors, an ECG AFE (Analog Front End), and internal LEDs. These features promise very precise, FDA-certifiable ECG and PPG performance in various electronic equipment like smart speakers, tablets, laptops, as well as mobile phones.
Till now, it was very challenging for designers to deliver ECG and PPG measurements in a synchronized manner. The two needed two different biosensors that took much more power and space than what can be allowed by the mobile device. Alongwith, precision in measurements was quite challenging especially where low perfusion levels influenced sensor sensitivity to quite an extent.
Maxim’s MAX86150 overcomes such challenges very easily and can sample both ECG and PPG simultaneously. The higher rate of battery consumption is controlled via software with approx. zero standby current allowing power tals to stay in power all the time.
What Gives MAX86150 an Edge Over All Others?
There are a number of factors that provide this integrated biosensor an edge over all others, the key ones are as follows:
- Small Form Factor: It has the same size as a stand-alone ECG sensor which means it is great on saving space and offering way better functionality without any electrode.
- Easy Deployment: It doesn’t needs any fluids, gels, wet pads, or sticky pads for more accurate readings.
- Long Battery Life: It brings down drainage of battery with very-low shutdown current. Exceptionally low power consumption than any counterpart solution.
- Its accuracy cannot be questioned at any points. At 135dB, its common mode rejection ratio as well as noise rejection is the best in market.
