For all hobbyists out there, here is a great project you can hands-on. It is called a Multichannel IR remote controller. The project is well implemented and tested for use by engineers at Multyremotes.com. As the name suggests, the multichannel remote controller can perform multiple functions at its receiving unit. It’s quite handy of a device and simple to use which eases your interface with any electric appliance whether it be AC/DC oriented.
As any other remote, it consists of a transmitting unit and a receiving unit. The receiving unit is programmed for multi tasking and so it is integrated with 89C51 microcontroller. The use of microcontroller makes the system more versatile as it can be programmed for specific industrial use and its attachment can be changed from application to application. It can be used in industries to control/operate any application/device remotely. It can also be used in homes/offices to operate any appliance remotely like fan, bulb, air cooler, table lampetc.
The number of switches in the transmitting unit indicates the number of functions that can be performed using the remote controller. The transmitting unit is integrated with a pulse generator (called multivibrator) and resistance pots to generate pulses of desired frequency. Whenever a switch is pressed, the multivibrator generates a pulse. Every switch generates a pulse of unique frequency. All the frequencies are between 70 Hz – 500 Hz. The receiver is fitted with microcontroller, IR sensors and leds. The transmitted IR signal is sensed by the sensor and the controller performs the task specific to received frequency. Depending upon the switch you press from remote control the corresponding LED will glow on receiver unit.
One can extend the number of functions that can be performed using this remote up to 8.
