Being on the affordable side, it wouldn’t be too much to ask if someone has two or more Raspberry Pi computers. While a regular computer system would limit itself to standard uses and owning multiple ones can do nothing more but give extra scope for networking, mini computers gadgets like the Pi increases the applicative scenario. This means that at the same time you can DIY a camera as well as a smart TV. But have you ever thought what can be reaped when multiple Raspberry Pi’s are combined? Get your imagination to level much higher than super quick cameras or autonomous quadcopters as we explore a super computer made out of Raspberry Pi’s. Yes, to state simply, patching up Pi’s to each other through Legos can build a supercomputer. Insane and crazy it sounds, but true it all is!!
Team of geniuses at University of Southampton, led by Professor Simon Cox have amassed as many as 64 Raspberry Pi’s to device up a supercomputer and as structural build to this DIY, they have used Lego blocks. Named Iridis-Pi, this is an assembly of Pi’s connected through Ethernet cables which, on the whole, costs less than 2500Pounds and can house up to 1TB memory. Its makers do call it only a demonstration device but it does gives some exclusive features like easy assembling, dissembling, power efficiency that make it quite suitable to be used for various experimental and educational purposes. They have detailed every aspect of this supercomputer and have also provided a DIY guide to all who want to try this out.
In the times like these when phones and computers boast of tremendous hardware specs like octa core processors that work at Gigahertz, gigabytes of RAM and ROM, generating a super computing machine out of a 700MHz, 512MB RAM computers cluster, does provoke a thought that are we moving too fast in reaping too much.
