Network Monitoring Expertise to Address the Challenges of Broadcasting

By Anudeep

Broadcasters across globe are challenged by increasing competition from OTT providers, the FCC repacks, and having to meet tighter compliance regulations. To address these challenges and help broadcasters to deliver high quality content and achieve compliance, Tektronix presented a new network monitoring system, highlighted as “next phase of broadcasting”.

Tektronix tailored the needs of a broadcaster by enhancing the existing Sentry Video Quality Monitors, the enhancements in Sentry help broadcasters to remain competitive in the market by reducing its operational costs.

Sentry and its enhancements

The Sentry is a next generation video quality monitoring solution for advanced video networks, offering a comprehensive QoE (Quality of Experience) and QoS (Quality of Service) monitoring. It also helps broadcasters to deliver a high quality content and achieve the required compliance. To deliver the new requirements, a series of enhancements are made these include full TR 101 290 monitoring and alarming, the new RF interface ensures end to end caption checks this output meet the latest FCC regulations.

Many broadcasters and service providers rely on standard TR 101 290 to monitor QoS (Quality of Service) and Sentry provides real-time monitoring and notify the broadcasters if there is any error related to the priority checks they are more most concerned about, it helps them with the operational costs and resolve issues quickly. In addition to this, Sentry also supports a range of program clock reference (PCR) measurements, including PCR drift, PCR jitter, PCR cycle time and PCR frequency offset.

In Sentry’s new version, RF monitoring capabilities have been expanded with two new interfaces, DVB- S/S2 and DVB- T/T2. These new interfaces, along with IP, 8VSB and IP allow easy integration into any broadcast signal distribution monitoring scheme.

According to Charlie Dunn, GM video product line, Tektronix said that “Broadcasters turn to Sentry as an affordable Quality of Service monitoring solutions for identifying and isolating problems quickly”, “Over the time upgrading Sentry will add more services and capabilities, broadcasters can easily upgrade to full quality of experience monitoring”.

Availability

The Sentry has been already available in the market, to know more about pricing and sales in your area you have to contact a Tektronix sale representative.
