Renesas Electronics Corporation, one of the leading suppliers of highly developed semiconductor solutions recently announced a completely new family of encapsulated digital DC/DC PMBus™ power modules. These new RAA210xxx simple digital power modules promise advanced performance and telemetry. These are as simple to use as the Renesas’ analog power modules. Those represent a complete step-down regulated power supply that delivers 70A, 50A, dual 25A, 33A, and 25A output current while working with industry standard 5V or 12V input power rails. The RAA210xxx family offers POL (Point-of-Load) conversion for highly developed ASICs, DSPs, memory, and FPGAs used in optical networking, storage, servers, as well as telecom equipment.

Every single device integrates a PWM controller, passives, inductor, and MOSFETs on the inner edge of thermally optimized HDA (High-Density Array) encapsulated module. All they need is to complete the power supply are output and input bulk capacitors. The RAA210xxx is a simplified, lower cost digital power module family that is compatible pin-to-pin with fully features digital ISL827xM series by Renesas. The simple digital power modules provide run-time digital programmability for supporting configuration changes along with a subset of PMBus commands, system monitoring, and full telemetry. If they need better digital control much later, they can easily upgrade to pin-compatible ISL827xM modules that will allow sharing of current with numerous modules connected in parallel series. It would also allow access to every kind of PMBus commands with the help of PowerNavigator™ tool, as well as non-volatile memory for better storage of configuration.

As the Vice President of Industrial Analog and Power Business Division at the Renesas Electronics Corporation, Philip Chesley, puts it, “Our simple digital power modules accelerate time to market for design teams that want an easier-to-use, lower-cost digital power solution. The RAA210xxx simple digital power products continue Renesas’ leadership in power density, high efficiency and fast transient performance to support demanding multi-rail POL requirements.”

The major features of the RAA210xxx Simple Digital Power Modules include:

●      Wider input voltage range that goes from 4.5-14 V.

●      Output current that goes from 25A-70A.

●      Programmable output voltage range that goes from 0..6 - 5V.

●      ± 1.2% output voltage accuracy over temperature, load, and line.
