Tests For Smallest “Spin Qubit” Chip For Quantum Computing Begin At Intel

The Intel research team is taking new leaps towards quantum computers by examining a small new “spin qubit” chip.  This new chip was result of hard work of Intel’s D1D Fab with the help of the very same silicon manufacturing techniques that has been used for creation of billions of other customary computer chips.

Dimensionally, the “spin qubit” chips are even smaller than pencil rubber and happens to be one of the smallest quantum computing chip made by Intel till date. The spin qubit chip works at very very low temperatures needed for quantum computing which ranges somewhere beneath 0 Fahrenheit which is 250 times colder as compared to space.

The spin qubit chip doesn’t come with any transistors, the off/on switches forms the base of present day computer equipment, however, qubits are only capable of holding a single electron. The behaviour of this single electron, that can exist in multiple spin states altogether, is capable of providing much higher computer power as compared to present day transistors and happens to be the base of quantum computing.

The zigzag lines that you see in the photograph are actually the printed wires that connect the chip’s qubits with external world. The most promising feature of the spin qubit” chip is the small size of its qubits. These size up to just 50 nanometers and are visible only when placed under an electron microscope. If you wish these together you can fit approx. 1500 qubits in diameter of a single strand of human hair.

It also means that the design for the advanced Intel spin qubit chip can easily be scaled up dramatically. The upcoming quantum computers will come with thousands or perhaps millions of qubits and will be much much more powerful than present day supercomputers.
