Athletes seems to be cheating by utilizing performance boosting drugs will bring their finest doping strategies to the 2016 Olympic Games beginning from 5th August in Rio de Janeiro. But the Brazilian Doping Laboratory is all set to catch them. They are ready with the novel analytical machines the lab will be identifying doping substances at the bottom concentrations in the absolute history of sports.
Despite the glittering novel equipment, the lab, and its team members very closely spent the games resting on the side lines. The World Anti-Doping Agency eradicated it last month for failing to meet the international standards. On 16 days before the opening ceremony of the sports, WADA declared it had restored the lab. Neither the Brazilian nor the WADA officials disclosed what provoked the suspension.
The lab at Brazil owes its prominence doping-electron potentialities in part to major improvements in huge spectrometry, or mass spec, which is a years old technique to illustrate molecules bases on their volumes and the trajectories that they carry via a magnetic and electric field. The novel technologies enable scientists to determine the volume of a compound more precisely and to distinguish among various compounds of the same volume.
With such high precision, it is possible for drug labs to recognize conveniently smaller concentrations of performance boosting drugs, sometimes long duration after they are being consumed. “Instrumentation has been much better,” says Anthony Butch, the director of the California University’s Olympic Analytical Laboratory. “The smaller you can go in identifying something, the bigger you will be able to recognize it is someone’s urine.”
Such results linked with improvements in our comprehension of how drugs are trimmed down in the body, “has resulted in remarkable differences for us,” say Butch. Investigators search not just for prohibited drug compounds but also the metabolites which are released by the body when the drug is processed. Such results can be identified in the urine for the much longer period, he confirms.
During the Summer Olympics that are going to hold in 2016, the Rio Lab situated at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro is going to test more than 6,000 urine and blood samples, generating results within the 24 hours, reveals Francisco Radler de Aquino Neto, a chemical researcher and the director of such facility. Lab experts will be searching for more than 500 distinct materials on WADA’s prohibited list. Among the materials, they will screen for those that are expected to reveal the presence of materials like stimulants, anabolic steroids, hormones and masking agents.
With the improvement in drug testing methods, the functionality and sophistication of athlete’s performance enhance the drug regimen. “They utilized to capture a huge whopping dose, and it was simpler to identify,” says Butch. Now they consume smaller doses at frequent intervals and try performing things that nobody expects individuals to place interestingly in their bodies – such as veterinary or experimental drugs that are not registered for humans. “Presently, the huge thing is peptide hormones and their related growth factors,” he says.
