ON Semiconductor has recently extended its portfolio of Interline Transfer Electron Multiplication CCD (IT-EMCCD) image sensors. The new options in the range target low-industrial applications like medical and scientific imaging, as well as, commercial and military applications for high-end surveillance.
Discussing the details of the new 4 mp KAE-04471, it is equipped with larger 7.4-micron pixels than those found in the existing IT-EMCCD devices, implying twice the light gathering capability and improved image quality under light starved conditions. The device is pin and package compatible with the existing 8 mp KAE-08151. This would enable manufacturers to leverage the camera designs to support the new device.

Moving on, the new KAE-02152, another offering in the lineup, carries 108p resolution and 2/3” optical format with enhanced pixel design that increases sensitivity in near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Besides, it’s fully compatible with the existing KAE-02150 and both the devices can be availed in packages incorporating an integrated thermoelectric cooler, simplifying the work required by camera manufacturers to develop a cooled camera design.
Interline Transfer EMCCD devices integrate two established imaging technologies with a unique output structure facilitating a new class of low-noise, high-dynamic-range imaging. This combination extends the low-noise architecture of EMCCD to multi-megapixel resolutions, and an innovative output design allows both standard CCD (normal-gain) and EMCCD (high-gain) outputs to be utilized for a single image capture i.e. extending dynamic range and scene detection from sunlight to starlight in a single image.

Availability
The KAE-04471 devices are available with the engineering grade versions, while the production versions can be availed in the second quarter of 2017. The KAE-02152 engineering grade version is available in a standard package as well as a package incorporating an integrated thermoelectric cooler while the production version of both the configurations would be available in the third quarter of 2017.
All IT‑EMCCD devices ship in ceramic micro-PGA packages, and are available in both Monochrome and Bayer Color configurations. Users can also avail Evaluation kits for devices in the IT-EMCCD portfolio which allow the full performance of this technology to be examined and reviewed under real-world conditions.
