Infineon Technologies AG recently came up with the new IGBT7 chip for the well-known Easy housing platform. The tech firm is moving the state-of-the-art TRENCHSTOP IGBT7 to a medium-powered domain in the industry package EconoDUAL 3.
The 1200V module currently offers the industry’s best power rating at 900A under this advanced chip technology. It enables a 30 percent better output current for a similar frame size as compared to the preceding technology. Additionally, it features specific improvements in the module’s chip and housing that directly caters the industrial drive applications.
This means it’s possible to implement all these designs in agricultural, construction, commercial vehicles, and solar inverters.
Where does it come from?
The IGBT7 chip is based on a brand new micro-pattern trench technology, the TRENCHSTOP. IGBT7 chip, which is capable of performing with way lower static losses as compared to IGBT4.
What’s so special about it?
The chip area is reduced by on-state voltage by a considerable amount of 30 percent saving the chip from huge loss during application for industrial drives that work at very moderate switching frequencies. Thanks to the controllability of the IGBT and oscillation, behavior gets reduced by a significant percent. It features a maximum permissible overload junction temperature of 175° C.
Another significant improvement featured by IGBT7 is with respect to FreeWheeling Diode (FWD) that’s now optimized for drive applications. The emitter-controlled seventh-generation diode yields a forward-voltage drop of 100 mV against that of EC4 diode. Even the oscillation tendency during the diode turn-off is much lower now.
EconoDUAL 3 comes with a higher power density, which helps in keeping module paralleling at bay leading to simplification of inverter design and better cost savings. Furthermore, this new technology can easily be implemented in a similar footprint that facilitates updating of pre-existing inverter system designs.
The EconoDUAL 3 module also comes with much better housing that can handle much higher temperatures and currents. You can avail it with pre-applied TIM (Thermal Interface Material) for the longest lifetime and lowest thermal resistance.
Availability
The 900 A module is one of the first Infineon products to feature EconoDual 3 portfolio with TRENCHSTOP IGBT7. More current classes/module types will reach the markets in 2020. For now, you can order FF900R12ME7_B11. By next month, the FF900R12ME7P_B11 with pre-applied TIM will be available.
