Redecoration of your living area can now be done with a single switch credits to an Italian team of scientists that recently created a ceramic tile that is capable of changing patterns, color, shade, or play up videos with a single click. Professor Guido Giuliani who works at the University of Pavia says, “This is not just a digital panel to replace an animated poster like you see on the Underground network, but a whole new way of life. “You are instantly in control of your own environment: if you don’t like your bathroom in blue, now you can change it to green. Whether you prefer flowery wallpaper, ducks or Christmas trees, that’s up to you.”
With the help of this photonics technology, the LUMENTILE or the Luminous Electronic Tile, the project fuses touch screen technology with plain ceramic tile which also includes structural materials, electronic chips and solid state light sources. All these can be controlled easily with a central core computer or a tablet or a smartphone. The tiles can be easily switched off to a normal default setting, these tiles are equipped with an installed MCU. These operate over a lexical network that is invisible to the user. The tiles have an enduring nature which means you can place these luminous ceramic tiles outside any building for promotional purposes where the appearances or colors can be changed within seconds.
Giuliani further explains, “External tiles would create a ‘chameleonic skin’, or instant camouflage. Although we are a long way off yet, this would allow a car or building to blend completely into its surroundings, and hence ‘disappear.” These tiles can also be converted into “smart floor panels that can recognize when exactly did an elderly person fell over the floor or recognizes the intruders or create some dynamic path for shopping centers.
