Renesas announced R-Car D1 Series of Automotive SoCs for 3D Clusters

By Anudeep

Renesas Electronics, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, announced the availability of the R-Card D1 Series, it is the first member of SoC (System on Chip) in the R- car family specially built for 3D instrument cluster systems. Renesas leverage its deep knowledge and expertise as the market leader in automotive semiconductor, it is introducing a new series to provide a smooth migration path for automotive system manufacturers, as the enhancement is being considered to shift 3D graphics instrument cluster systems in near future.

As the use of color LCD panels in cluster systems becomes more far-flung, gauge control and graphic displays are combined for small and medium cars. The vogue towards “gauge-less” displays are already booming in high end cars, where visibility and comfort are desired, easy to see displays using 3D graphics on high resolution panels are seen as one aspect of a car’s individuality. Display size and solution in future are expected to increase, even in the graphics display in low-end cars, along with the use of cluster systems that provide 3D graphics similar use in high-end cars.

The systems to become more mainstream and able to realize rich reality image display that make full use of 3D graphics, the ability to display the cluster screen rapidly, the ability to realize high reliability to prevent unauthorized access from outside to the system to endlessly convey accurate information of the instruments to the driver, and the power to enhance the performance of electronic equipment units and communication systems.

The R- Car D1 has capability in both the functionality and performance to overcome the issues, since Renesas customers can take advantage of the R-Car Consortium ecosystem that consists of over 170 companies across globe, they are capable of developing a 3D graphics cluster system quickly. R-Car family of SoCs also implements high functionality human machine interfaces for high end automotive cockpit systems. Renesas also offers gauge control support through its microcontrollers (MCUc). It is very ideal for entry- level and mid-range automotive systems.

Some of the key features of R-Car

  • 3D Graphic cluster systems can be developed easily in association with Renesas.

  • It enables a rapid startup for instrument cluster systems.

  • Driver safety protection and car hacking prevention are deployed to provide functional safety and security solutions.

  • It is designed to a superlative flexibility and ease of design to support a wide range of communication and network types.

  • Development assets from the 2D graphics cluster can also be applied.
