Renesas Electronics Unveils R9J02G012 Controller to Support Safer USB Power Delivery Ecosystem

Renesas Electronics, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, has announced its new R9J02G012 USB Powder Delivery (USB PD) controller. It’s intended to be used in a wide range of USB PD products employing direct current (DC) power including AC adapters, PCs, smartphones, other office and consumer equipment, toys, etc. 

 

R9J02G012 is the industry’s first single package solution (Note 1) that supports both USB Power Delivery Rev. 3.0 (USB PD 3.0) and USB Type-C Authentication Rev 1.0, which allows device-to-device authentication. 

 

The growing demand for fast charging mobile devices is driving increased demand for high DC power delivery (e.g. 100 W). Earlier, system manufacturers used to implement proprietary fast-charging methods using USB Micro-B connectors. However, the recent incidents of smartphone charging/battery, it has become critical to offering a safe ecosystem of USB PD compatible products.

 

 

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), an industry leading technology consortium, has standardized the following specifications to meet the market needs;

 

• USB Type-C Rev 1.2 Specification

• USB Power Delivery Rev 3.0 Specification

• USB Type-C  Authentication Rev 1.0 Specification

 

Adopting all these standards, Renesas has offered R9J02G012 as a flexible, small-package USB PD controller for USB Type-C port control on any USB PD devices. All connecting ports to these USB PD devices with the R9J02G012 can be electronically verified and it will ease in trusting the authenticity based on the certificates and public key infrastructure (PKI) defined in the USB Type-C Authentication Specification. 

 

 

• It supports the new USB PD Rev 3.0 standard and the USB Type-C Authentication Rev 1.0 Standards for device-to-device authentication.

• It implements the USB PD 3.0 and USB Type-C authentication standards on a compact, single package, which reduces the mounting area on the board to less than 50% than the existing Renesas device.

• It supports PD firmware update (PDFU) in USB PD Rev 3.0 specification.

 

 

R9J02G012 samples are going to be available from June 2017 at USD 10 per unit. The mass production is scheduled to commence from January 2018 and is speculated to reach a volume of 1,000,0000 units per month by January 2019.
