The leading supplier of highly developed semiconductor solutions recently expanded the highly integrated Renesas Synergy™ S5 MCU (microcontroller) series with S5D3 MCU Group.

There are four new additions extending the mid-range S5D5 and high-en S5D9 MCU groups. The S5 features remain a common linking factor among all along with the common features that control the low power IoT, cost-sensitive endpoint devices. The basic level S5D3 MCUs will be targeting a wide range of office, building automation, smart metering, home appliances, and systems using a capacitive touch HMI (Human-Machine Interface).
Renesas’ SSP (Synergy Software Package) will back the S5D3 MCUs with real-time operating systems, HAL drivers, and application frameworks. It will simplify the tasks for embedded system designers who will now be able to use Renesas Synergy development environments – – e2 studio or the IAR Embedded Workbench to customize and create new designs.
The S5D3 MCUs take basis in 40nm process and integrate the SCE (Secure Cryptographic Engine) 7 with best protection that keeps the IoT endpoint device communication and MCU boot code quite safe quite reliably. This ability allows these MCUs to bring down the overall BOM cost and requirement for outer security functions.
Features
The SCE7 carries following features:
● A true random number generator (TRNG
● Numerous hardware accelerators like SHA, ECC, AES, DSA, RSA, and others.
The S5D3 MCU comes laden with following;
● 512 KB flash memory.
● Large 256 KB SRAM memory.
● 8 KB flash that allows better read/write cycles than its other counterparts.
● Superior power consumption of approx. 100 μA/MHz in an active mode.
● Very low 1.3 μA power consumption on the standby mode.
● 900 nA power consumption for the VBATT supply that helps in smooth running of real-time clock.
All these features make these devices perfect for applications needing high performance on low power consumption mode.
The Maker’s Words
As Daryl Khoo, the Vice President of Product Marketing of IoT Platform Business Division at Renesas Electronics Corporation, puts it, “The S5D3 MCUs beat the competition with superior security, memory performance, MCU scalability, and Synergy Platform support. The cost-optimized and pin-compatible S5D3 MCUs are scalable up through the S5D5, S5D9 and S7G2 MCU groups if customers later require additional features, more memory, or higher performance.”
