Renesas Unveils Industry-Leading Small Design Class Inverter Kit Solution

By Neha Rastogi

Renesas Electronics Corporation has unveiled the new 100 kW class inverter solution that achieves industry-leading small design class of 3.9 liter (L) for high power 100 kW class motors in mid-to-large-sized hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) including SUVs, and mid-to-small-sized electric vehicles (EVs). The new offering is going to be offered as a solution kit including software that maximizes the HEV/EV motor performance and hardware components like microcontrollers, Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT), fast recovery diode (FRD), and other semiconductor devices.

The solution would enable developers to cut down various development steps ranging from specifications analysis to hardware/software development and motor characteristics adjustments. For example, the prototyped inverter system development period would be shortened from 2-3 years to just 1 year thus reducing the development cycle and costs to a significant extent.

Owing to the increased CO2 emissions, there is a huge demand for electric vehicles and the inverter plays a key role in such vehicles. This calls for the miniaturization of the inverter to allow the mounting of the electric unit in the given space of the engine room for every type and size of the vehicle while ensuring high precision and efficiency. These needs are addressed by Renesas’ new inverter solution.

Key Features of 10 kW Class Inverter Solution:

• It has an industry-leading small design class of 3.0 L and reduced inverter system weight that allows it to be mounted even in smaller spaces.

• The temperature management technology can be employed to increase the responsiveness and precision of the temperature sensors integrated in the IGBT.

• The solution contains a motor calibration tool that simplifies construction of motor control systems that are highly efficient at the system level. Thus manufacturers can directly evaluate a prototype in an actual car.

• The use of IGBT/FRD devices reduces conduction loss and switching loss which helps the inverter solution achieve a current loss reduction of approximately 12%.
