The Japan Windsurfing Association, Fujitsu Limited, and Lapis Semiconductor Co., Ltd. have announced to start the IoT-based field trials in order to help windsurfers improve their sailing skills. The trials will begin on May 11 and will continue till September 30, 2017. For the trials, Lapis Semiconductor has developed a device that can simultaneously record GPS and sensor data across nine-axes sensor data from an accelerometer, gyrometer, and geomagnetic sensor unit. For the first time in windsurfing, the technology will help in using data to understand sail handling. This would allow competitors to compare their data with those with higher ranks, thereby enabling in discovering ways to improve their sailing skills by looking at differences in handling 3D models and numerical values.
