How about having a completely automated aquarium that can manage its temperature, lighting, and send you alerts as soon as something goes wrong. The one we are talking about here is an aquarium system powered by Raspberry Pi-2. it makes the system potent enough to control the lighting and keep a close check on water temperature. Crontab scheduling and Python scripts here play the major role in taking note of ambience and water temperatures, these alert the owner through email with IFTTT in case the readings go out of defined range.
The data will be registered in MySQL database. This can be accessed with the help of PHP web page over an Apache server. The PHP will then call on to a Phython cript for reading the information from database and graphing out the result with a Google API. The best thing about this system is that it allows one to set up the temperatures as per the area you just moved in. The temperature is monitored with the help of a pair of waterproof D18B20. One stays in water while the other one gets placed outside the waterbody.
The system is also installed with 12v white and blue LED lighting that is administered with the help of a pair of relays. You can buy these LEDs at very basic price from eBay. You can always set up different combinations for different parts of day. The basic reason for using cheap lighting is that in case of damages these can be replaced with great ease. There is a camera fitted in this system that streams live state of the aquarium through RPi Cam Control. However, it is highly water dependent. You need to fill it with water up to its brim. Some of your fishes who need an air pocket over surface might not agree with this arrangement.
