The Great Wall Of China Will Regain Its Lost Charm With Intel’s Drone And Artificial Intelligence Technology

By Shreepanjali Mod June 1, 2018

The China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation recently entered into a partnership with Intel for restoreration and protection of the Great Wall of China. As the general manager and Vice President of Intel’s Drone team, Anil Nanduri,  says, “ Using drones, set multiple aspects of the structure including areas that are quite inaccessible.

We  continue to be excited about the future of inspections being automated all the way from drone data capture to data processing, analysis and insights. We look forward to leveraging technology to aid in the preservation of more world heritage sites in the future.” So why does the restoration of Great Wall of China matters so much? The reason is that the Great Wall’s Jiankou section happens to be one of the most popular  and steepest stretches. The Jiankou section  is located amidst very thick vegetation and the area  dates back to 3rd Century BC. This explains  the tattered condition of wall and the dire need of repairs.

Intel’s  Falcon 8+  drones  will patrol and inspect the area remotely and will map out  the specific Jiankou  section that has proved to be quiet distant and difficult for repair teams. The chairman of  China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation,  Li Xiaojie,  likes to add, “As  one of the seven wonders of the world,  The Great Wall has been exposed to weather erosion for thousands of years.  Some  parts are on steep inclines,  which pose a great challenge for daily maintenance.  Our  partnership with Intel has opened up new avenues for preservation.”

In the coming months,  the Falcon 8+  drones from Intel will be  hovering  over this specific section of Great Wall of China and will capture aerial photographs of walls that will lead to development of high-definition 3D images. The images clicked by Falcon 8+  drones will help the  repair teams take a closer look at present condition of the wall and decide what kind of steps need to be taken for its conservation.

The Artificial Intelligence data registered buy these drones will help  in creation of a visual representation of China’s Great Wall. This visual representation will help in safe identification of sections that need to be repaired first. Intel’s Global brand marketing leader,  Alyson Griffin, further adds that, “ This  partnership showcases how Intel’s Technology breakthroughs can benefit with the restoration off the Great Wall of China.  It’s  a powerful example of how Intel’s artificial intelligence  and drone technology can positively impact the world.”
