Virtium Embedded Artists’ SOM provides dual Gigabit Ethernet and PCIe Gen 3

Virtium Embedded Artists has released the RZ/G3E SOM, a system-on-module based on the Renesas RZ/G3E application processor. The module provides compute, connectivity, and graphics capabilities for industrial and medical equipment human-machine interfaces.

The SOM integrates interfaces, memory, and storage to support the RZ/G3E compute engine, which includes quad Arm Cortex-A55 CPU cores and a single Cortex-M33 CPU. The module can control two Full HD displays and provides MIPI-DSI, dual LVDS, and digital RGB interfaces. HMI capabilities include H.264 and H.265 video codecs and a 3D graphics controller. Connectivity features include a dual-data lane PCIe Gen 3 interface, single USB 3.2 and dual USB 2.0 interfaces, and a dual Gigabit Ethernet controller.

The RZ/G3E SOM measures 82mm by 50mm and is compatible with an MXM3 connector. This configuration provides a hardware implementation for developers using the RZ/G3E application processor. A development kit is available that includes a carrier board which can serve as a reference design for custom carrier board development.

The RZ/G3E SOM supports three Linux operating system options: Linux BSP Plus, the Verified Linux Package, or a Software Development Kit. Each option provides different levels of support for kernel updates and maintenance from Renesas.

The module is available in versions with commercial temperature range (0°C to 70°C) or industrial temperature range (-40°C to 85°C) operation.

The RZ/G3E processor includes an integrated Arm Ethos-U55 neural processing unit core rated for 0.5 TOPS of inference performance for vision AI, voice AI, and sensor data-based AI applications. Virtium Embedded Artists also offers a version with a DeepX DX-M1 AI accelerator that provides 25 TOPS of AI performance for inference applications.

Virtium Embedded Artists is accepting orders for the RZ/G3E SOM through its website at www.embeddedartists.com and through distributors Arrow, Avnet, and Future Electronics. Shipments are scheduled to begin in November 2025.
