Iris recognition is another sub field of Biometrics similar to fingerprint and face recognition, wherein the patterns of the IRIS are used to authenticate the identity of a person. The system involves taking the image of IRIS, extracting the patterns/features using algorithms and comparing it with the patterns/features stored in the database. It has been scientifically proven that every person has a unique and stable IRIS pattern throughout the life and hence this field is drawing huge interest of researchers. Professor John Daugman, from University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory is credited to successfully develop algorithm for IRIS detection to be used in various commercial products.
