A serial mouse is a pointing device which connects to the computer using a serial port. Like any other mouse, e.g. PS/2 and USB mouse, it works on the principle of detection of 2-Dimensional motion on a plane supporting surface and then translates that physical motion into the movement of the cursor on the display terminal. It uses a RS-232C serial port via D-subminiature connector to provide power to the mouse and also gather data of its motion for the pointing function.
