Winbond Electronics Introduces its Lowest-Voltage SpiFlash Memories

By Neha Rastogi June 30, 2017

Winbond Electronics Corporation, a leading global supplier of semiconductor memory solutions, has announced an expansion of its flash product portfolio with the addition of its lowest-voltage SpiFlash memories till date.

Carrying 1.2 and 1.5V, industry’s lowest NOR Flash voltages, and packed in 8-pin packages, these members of SpiFlash family provide designers with serial flash memories for audio, wearable, IoT and other demanding applications that call for low power in small packages. Besides, the low voltages and 52 Mbps transfer rate make the new SpiFlash memories optimal for a wide range of consumer and industrial applications.

The 1.2V products cover an operating voltage range from 1.14V to 1.3V while the 1.5V devices have a voltage range from 1.14V to 1.6V. The former is ideal for very-low-power designs whereas the latter is suitable for portable designs to add the benefit of sustained battery operation.
The two lines of memories render low standby and power-down currents alongside the lowest read current at high clock frequency. Their market-leading low power capability enables designs with longer battery life. The extended 1.5V memory takes advantage of the popular 1.5V battery technology’s operating voltage range. This ensures the operation of device and support for full voltage range from the time the battery is fresh to the time it reaches the end point.

The newly added devices also contribute to printed circuit board space savings. In place of the larger power-management ICs, smaller low-dropout regulators can be used due to the design’s low voltages, thereby saving PCB area as well as bill-of-materials costs.
Owing to the ultra-low standby power, the battery usage time is extended and devices can operator a longer time. Besides, the lower voltages reduce noise coupling, which provides for more compact PCB designs.
