The American car maker, Ford Motor Company, is known for encouraging its employees to bring-on innovative concepts that can make a big difference to the world. There are many who make the effort but very few attain the goal. This year, as well, there is one that has moved against all odds and was able to register his name above all others. The top concept came from Germany and is known as ‘Carr-E’. It is a spare-tire-sized personal mobility solution that has been designed for the last mile that you cover from your car door to your office door or home door.
The design was put forward by a system engineer from Ford, Kilian Vas, and he claims that the Carr-E is capable of transporting objects or people weighing up to 120kg along a range of 22 kilometers at a maximum speed of 18 kmph. It can also be used for carrying out heavy products since the device goes after an electronic transmitter that is carried by the user. This is a remarkable model that competed with 633 similar entries that were registered by Ford for the final round.
There were several other entries that included TriCiti, a device that you can ride, carry load by adjusting it a bit, store it in a vehicle or even fold it to ride on a public transport. It has a fixed range of 30 kilometers and can gain a top speed of 20kmph. There was one more noteworthy invention called, the eChair, which is actually a lightweight electric wheelchair that can fold itself to form a car. It was with a special view to give more freedom to people who face mobility issues in daily life.
Vas adds, “We really need to reinvent the wheel, to find new approaches to mobility. When developing the Carr-E, I was inspired by Ford’s expansion into both an auto and a mobility company, but I’m also aware of how rapidly cities are growing and how getting around urban areas will become progressively more complicated. I really wanted to create a device that makes commuting easier and more fun.”
