Maxim’s LED Matrix Manager Powers Up Automotive Pixel and Matrix Lighting

By Shreepanjali Mod

Designers of adaptive driving beam LED (Light-Emitting Diode) and automotive matrix lighting applications may get pulled up to the level of higher current devices since it reduces the size of solution as well as improves the flexibility with MAX20092 12-switch matrix manager from Maxim Integrated Products Inc. The IC further brings down thermal issues related to LED matrix lighting applications by providing the lowest internal switch resistance in the industry. This new one is approx. 65% lesser as compared to closest competitive solutions.

Brand differentiation and safety happen to be the two leading factors leading to better adoption of LEDs in the front lighting platforms of automotive that are expanding at the rate of 30% every year. As a mark of their specific identities, OEMs are now designing some really advanced safety features like matrix lighting and LEDs. But the catch is that LED light designers face the challenges related to design, thermal, and power complexities.

The MAX20092 is appreciated for offering quite adaptable flexible current management for pixel and matrix lighting. Twelve integrated switches take control of LEDs in string voltage up to 56V, it really saves a lot of complexity on design and time front. Its integrated MOSFET over resistance that stands at 70 mohm which is the lowest in industry and can drive up the LED current as high as 1.5A maxim’s 12-switch LED matrix manager is provided in a very small 5mm x 5mm TQFN package. Along with it, Maxim recently introduced MAX20097 and max20096 dual channel, synchronous  buck high-brightness LED controllers that work in sync with the MAX20092. It would help designers improve their transient response times inside the LED lighting. The MAX20097 and MAX20096 deliver super-fast transient response along with near-fixed frequency along with average current mode control scheme which is Maxim’s proprietary which minimizes EMI and allows a high-performing, reliable design.

Kevin Mark, the senior analyst for Automotive Practice of Strategy Analytics, says, “Although matrix LED headlights enhance safety, they were once exclusively for the premium auto sector, due to their complexity and high cost. Technology developments that enhance LED efficiency and performance will drive their greater adoption into automotive platforms. Maxim’s MAX20092 is one of the solutions that aligns with greater adoption trends for LED lighting in automotive applications.”
