A lot of people use microcontrollers to get text to float around on a character LCD. But this project here, comes with a twist. This guy has done something like that but instead there are graphics with super cool transitions. He has used persistence of vision for these cool effects and his project also got featured on Hack-A-Day in 2013.
He has used PIC 16F628 microcontroller, a 4 bit LCD interface running at 8MHz. You can check out his LCD cage, which looks pretty cool BTW, on the link given below and of course the videos to see the real thing.
