Diamond, the naturally occurring natural stone, has a shine that outmatches all other precious stones. However, there is also no lack of fake replicas that look, feel, and shine like diamonds but are not the actual diamonds. Differentiating between the two is a tough task and includes a long series of chemical and other tests that include identification of its physical properties of this stone. A prospective diamond finder needs to equip themselves with flawless information about the 4C’s of diamond i.e. its cut, clarity, carat, and color. Though the identification of real diamond includes a number of high-end chemicals tests, there are a few tricks you can use at home to find out the real one.
Here are the easiest ones:
Sandpaper Vs Diamond:
Most replicas are actually cubic zirconias. You can find this out by simply rubbing those against a sandpaper. As the two go against each other, the zirconia gets scratched up and loses its sheen. Au contraire, a natural diamond would never lose its texture as its happens to be one of the toughest stones in the world.
Fog Test:
Diamonds are also good conductors of heat which means when you breathe against its surface the fog would dissipate within moments. Zirconia, on the other hand, has lower heat conductivity. So whenever you will breathe against its surface the fog would condense over the surface prior dissipation. However, a few stand as an exception to this rule. The Moissanite exhibit similar behaviour as diamond and makes primary detection of real diamond a bit complicated.
The Fire And Sparkle Test:
Diamonds have a higher refractive index as compared to other stones which impart them with an unmatched spark. If you observe closely, you will see grey and white colors in it that define the brilliance of this precious scintillating stone. Also, when subjected to light, you will see the visible spectrum, the fire, on its outer end due to dispersion effect. The fake diamonds exhibit the rainbow inside the diamond.
