Murata Manufacturing Co. Ltd. recently introduced a CMCC (Common Mode Choke Coil) for Automotive Ethernet (100BASE-TI) named as DLW32MH201YK2. Its ability to face ab extreme temperature range (from -55 to +150°C.) makes it one of the first of its kind in the world. Murata plans to begin its mass production from December 2019 onwards.
Why was it needed?
The total number of ECUs (Electronic Control Units) in cars has increased with further advancement in technology. In the last few years, this number has been on a steep rise because these units play a key role in supporting autonomous driving systems like ADAS. Also, there is a growing requirement for more robust systems and components that can withstand high temperatures under pressurized conditions like the engine rooms.
The DLW32MH201YK2 is capable of working across a temperature range of -55°C to +150°C. The regular products have a considerably narrower range of operational temperature that goes from -40°C to +125°C. It means the DLW32MH201YK2 can be used in much harsher environments.
How did the makers do it?
The designing team of this coil achieved the broader operating temperature range by using metal termination. These metal terminations can absorb the stress developed by fluctuations in temperature and optimizing a combination of original materials provided by Murata. Product design also plays a key role in respect. The biggest perk is that the small dimensions of this product allow installation of ECUs in much more versatile environments.
