A kernel is the inner most part of an operating system that directly interacts with the hardware like processor, memory and disc drivers. It acts between the hardware and shell (which interacts with the user inputs). Kernel is the first part of the operating system that loads in to the memory (in protected area of the memory to protect it from overwritten) and remains there during the entire session as its services are continuously required.
