An RTOS also called Real Time Operating System, is a specially designed OS for use in real time application. It performs all the tasks of an OS but provides the programmer with highly precise timing and a high degree of reliability. In automation system it is required to have absolutely precise delays otherwise it may result in safety hazards. For example in the auto ejection mode of fighter planes, even a small delay can put the life in danger for the pilot. Hence it is required that the applications developed for real time systems should be developed in a highly precise environment, which is the job of RTOS.
