Decorating the house using fancy decorative lights during festive seasons is a common practice taking place all over the world. From the top of the roof to the trees, we want to put them everywhere and feel the raring for the dusk to see their beauty. While placing them at such unusual places, we do make smart wire hacks and connections, so that they can be powered easily. Finding the nearest connection, attaching an extension power cord, making the source easily accessible and many more concerns are there. Hiring an electrician is the easiest way, but doing this on your own, brings the joy of hard earned fun in the festival. Let’s add a bit of computing in this joy. Let’scontrol the switching of these lights without even going near to them. Let’s control them without even being in the house, let’s control using internet, a webapp (an application that works via internet).
Controlling lights and such essential home electric appliances through your computer is just another application using Raspberry Pi. This DIY makes use of the GPIO pins of the mini-computer along with a web server known as WebPy. It is through this server that the webapp would power you to control the lights from anywhere. You would also need a few remote controlled outlets, solder, wire cutters and such other usual electric tools. What else? You would also need to design a circuit board as per your requirement.
This project tests out hardware as well as software expertise and can be called as one of the most complete engineering DIY’s. Hence, compulsorily, you will have to assemble and test a lot of stuff before final implementation. The end results being a simpler approach towards home automation, control over power consumption, efficiency and miraculous accessibility power using any web browser on any internet enabled device.
